Order "16 gauge 7/32 inch" jump rings from two suppliers and you can receive two visibly different rings — because "16 gauge" is not one measurement. Most chainmail suppliers never say which gauge system they use, and the difference changes your weave. This is the single most expensive mistake in ring buying, and almost nobody explains it.

Aspect ratio (AR) is the ring's inner diameter divided by its wire diameter. It — not gauge, not ID alone — determines how a weave looks and moves. At AR ~3.5, European 4-in-1 pulls into the tight, scale-dense sheet that reads as armor. Push the same ID to AR ~4.3 with thinner AWG wire and the weave opens up: more daylight between rings, looser drape, a different fabric entirely.
Both rings are honestly labeled "16 gauge 7/32 inch." SWG wire is simply thicker at the same gauge number — 0.063" vs 0.051" — and that 0.012" moves the AR by nearly a full point.
Never mix ring sources mid-project in this size. A section woven from SWG rings next to a section from AWG rings will not match — different density, different flex, visible seam. Pick one wire standard and buy every ring of a build from it.
Every 16g 7/32" ring in our shop is 16 SWG — the 0.063" wire, AR ~3.5, the tight European 4-in-1 ring. Bright aluminum by the pound (4,000+ rings), a 500-count starter pack, and anodized colors by the half pound — all the same wire, all interchangeable with each other.
