What changes when you switch materials?
A material name alone does not predict a finished build. Compare the exact scale geometry, published per-piece mass or pack weight, finish, and a woven sample before combining packs.
Where aluminum earns its place
Anodizing converts the aluminum surface into an oxide finish that is integral to the metal. It does not peel like an applied paint layer, though abrasion can still mark the finish and expose bright metal at an edge.
- Choose aluminum when metallic reflection, audible movement, and a traditional armor feel matter.
- Check whether the listed finish is anodized, painted, polished, or bare. Those finishes wear differently.
- Test a small mixed-color swatch before committing to a large field. Dye lots and surface textures can differ.
What to verify on a polycarbonate listing
Do not assume a plastic scale is lighter, quieter, or dimensionally interchangeable from the material label alone. Ask for measurable specifications and test the behavior that matters to your project.
- Compare length, width, thickness, hole diameter, and hole position against the ring pattern you plan to use.
- Request per-scale mass or weigh a known-count pack before estimating a wearable project's finished weight.
- Build a small swatch to compare sound, drape, scratch visibility, and color under the light where the piece will be used.
